All about: Pilgrimage to Rome in honour of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman

With over 2500 years of history, the Italian capital has played a pivotal role in Christianity. On the banks of the River Tiber, the independent state of Vatican City, home of the Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Father, is central to all pilgrimages to Rome. Here, pilgrims can immerse themselves in the splendour and devotion of St Peters Basilica and Square, visit the crypt of the Popes, the tomb of St Peter, the Sistine Chapel, climb the magnificent Cupola (Dome) or explore the vast collections of religious and secular artefacts housed within the Vatican Museum.

Located throughout the city are the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. These include the five great patriarchal Basilicas of St. John Lateran (the cathedral church of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope), St. Peters, St. Paul outside the walls, St. Mary Major and St. Laurence outside the walls. These along with the minor basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and St. Sebastian comprise the popular pilgrimage route.

Other religious and historical places of interest where groups may decide to visit include the Catacombs, the Scala Santa (the Holy Stairway), the Capuchin Crypt in the church of Our Lady of the Conception, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the English College.
Whilst visiting Rome, groups will be provided with ample time to explore the city on their own. Our hotel is central to the main historical places of interest.

Devotion to the Mother of Good Counsel is associated with the story of a miraculous icon, found in a church in Genazzano, a beautiful town 30 miles south-east of Rome. The church dedicated to the Mother of Good Counsel was built in the 4th century. In 1356 the church was given over to the Augustinians. Restoration started in 1467, however funds depleted before the task was completed.

That same year, all the residents of Genazzano heard a beautiful melody coming from heaven. As they looked up, they saw a white, shining cloud that descended on the church of the Mother of Good Counsel. The cloud gradually vanished, revealing a beautiful icon.

The amazing news reached Rome. Pope Paul II sent bishops to investigate the story. The prelates reported that 171 miracles were recorded in the months following the icon’s appearance.

The icon is about a foot wide and eighteen inches high. It depicts a mother that is half turned toward her son and half toward the viewer, reflecting Mary’s concern for both Jesus and his Church.

In 1753, Pope Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel to promote devotion to Mary under this title. Pope Leo XIII added the title Mother of Good Counsel to the Litany of Loreto. Pope Pius XII dedicated his term of office to Our Lady of Good Counsel. And Pope John XXIII visited her shrine to pray for the success of the Second Vatican Council.
