All about: A Pilgrimage to Ireland

Fr. Huebert Miranda & his parishioner's from London invite you to join them on their first pilgrimage holiday to the Emerald Isle.

Despite a long pilgrim tradition and strong national reputation for spirituality, there was until relatively recently little footfall on Ireland’s ancient penitential paths with the country not regarded as an important destination for spirituality motivated travel.

Pilgrimage has been defined as “a meaningful journey to a place of spiritual significance” and the practice is almost as old as recorded history. In Ireland the pilgrim journey has strong historic resonance with early Christian scholars coming to Clonmacnoise; medieval penitents journeying to Lough Derg, and Glendalough, while others sought heightened spirituality by visiting Skellig Michael or climbing Croagh Patrick.

Live through the medieval journeys in ancient monastic sites we visit and finish with heightened spirituality at the National Shrine or Our Lady of Knock - one of the most important Marian Pilgrimage destinations in the Christian world.

  1. Day 1 Sunday 24 September 2017
Take the mid-morning Aer Lingus flight from Gatwick (09:20am departure) to Dublin.

Upon arrival, you will be greeting by your Anam Cara Travel guide.

Transfer from the airport through the Wicklow mountains to the valley of Glendalough; renowned for its early medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. The group will enjoy a hearty Irish lunch before the short walk to the Visitor Centre. Here you can marvel at the monastic churches and fortifications set amidst the backdrop of a stunning glacial valley.
Afternoon – Guided visit of Glendalough followed with the pilgrimage opening Mass. After an opportunity for photos, we transfer to our hotel located in Tullamore, County Offaly.

Check-in for 3 nights. Relax with a 4 course á la carte meal.

Included meals: Lunch & 4-course dinner
  2. Day 2 Monday 25 September 2017
After a hearty Irish breakfast buffet, we transfer north-east to the ancient town of Drogheda located in County Louth. We celebrate Holy Mass in St. Peters Cathedral, where the relic of St. Oliver Plunkett is venerated. Free time to explore the streets of Drogheda which is one of the oldest towns in Ireland! Then a short coach transfer to Monasterboice for lunch.

Afternoon – we continue to the UNESCO Heritage Site of Newgrange, in the Boyne Valley (located 6 miles from Drogheda). This prehistoric monument was built during the Neolithic period around 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids! The site consists of a large circular mound with a stone passageway and interior chambers. There is no agreement about what the site was used for, but it has been speculated that it had pagan religious significance – it is aligned with the rising sun and its light floods the chamber on the winter solstice. It is the most famous monument within the Brú na Bóinne complex. The group will benefit from a guided tour & entrance to the sacred tomb.

After the tour, we return to the Hotel for a 4 Course á la carte meal.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch & 4-course dinner

  3. Day 3 Tuesday 26 September 2017

After breakfast, depart for the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary. Here you will enjoy a guided visit one of Ireland’s most famous attractions! The Rock of Cashel also known as Cashel of the Kings and St. Patrick's Rock, was the seat of the Ancient High Kings of Ireland and a monastic complex. Tradition tells us that St. Patrick preached on the Rock and converted the King of Munster to Christianity during the 5th Century. The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe!

The group will celebrate Holy Mass in Cashel before continuing onwards to Thurles town for lunch (not included).

Afternoon - return to Tullamore for a guided visit of the Whiskey Distillery with tasting. Then back to the comfort of the hotel for a 4-course evening meal.

Included meals: Breakfast & 4-course dinner

  4. Day 4 Wednesday 27 September 2017

After breakfast, check-out of the hotel and transfer to Clonmacnoise Monastery. This early Christian site was founded by St. Ciarán in the mid-6th century on the eastern bank of the River Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, seven churches (10th -13th century), two round towers, three high crosses and the largest collection of early Christian grave-slabs in Western Europe. The original high crosses and a selection of grave-slabs are on display in the visitor centre. The long and varied history of Clonmacnoise is recounted in an audiovisual presentation shown in the centre. Depending on the weather, the group will celebrate Holy Mass in an open-air oratory.

After Mass, we continue to Athlone Town, the capital of the Midlands. Some free time for lunch and shopping in Athlone before we continue onwards to Claremorris. Here we check-in to 4* McWilliam Park Hotel for 2 nights. Relax in the hotel pool & spa area before enjoying a 4 course á la carte meal in hotel restaurant.

Included meals: Breakfast & 4-course dinner

  5. Day 5 Thursday 28 September 2017

After breakfast, transfer to Ballintubber Abbey for Mass.

Located on the shores of Lough Carra, with the Partry Mountains as the backdrop, this area is steeped in history and is the subject of ongoing excavation for archaeologists from all over the world. Known locally as the Abbey that refused to die; Holy Mass has been celebrated here every day for over 780 years! Founded in 1216 by King Cathal O’Connor, it's the only Royal Abbey in Ireland still in use.

Scenic drive to the beautiful Atlantic coastal town of Westport. Free time to explore the many shops, pubs and enjoy some lunch (perhaps the famous seafood!). Then onwards to the pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, overlooking Clew Bay. A short climb to the base of the mountain offers a panoramic view of the bay. A Pagan festival was held here every year by our megalithic ancestors. Tradition tells us that St. Patrick came to Ireland in 441AD and spent time on this mountain praying and converting, hence the pagan festival was transformed into a Christian one. Since then people have been following in the footsteps of St. Patrick climbing the mountain. Instead of the climb, why not relax with a drink in the pub at the base of the mountain.

We return to our Hotel in for evening meal and craic!

Included meals: Breakfast & 4 course dinner

  6. Day 6 Friday 29 September 2017

After a hearty Irish buffet breakfast, we check-out of the hotel and take a short coach transfer to the Irish National Shrine of Knock. We start with a brief guided visit to the Sanctuary, where on the evening of the 21 August 1879, 15 people witnessed an apparition of Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist at the south gable end of the local parish church. Behind them and a little to the left of Saint John was a plain altar with a cross and a lamb (a traditional image of Jesus) with adoring angels. After some private time for prayers in the Apparition Chapel, we will celebrate our closing Mass for this pilgrimage.

Free time for lunch in Café Le Cheile & perhaps a visit to the museum before our transfer to Knock Airport

The return flight to London Gatwick will depart at 7:55 pm
