All about: Rome, Cascia & Assisi

With over 2500 years of history, the Italian capital has played a pivotal role in Christianity.

On the banks of the River Tiber, the independent state of Vatican City, home of the Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Father, is central to all pilgrimages to Rome.  Here, pilgrims can immerse themselves in the splendour and devotion of St Peters Basilica and Square, visit the crypt of the Popes, the tomb of St Peter, the Sistine Chapel, climb the magnificent Cupola (Dome) or explore the vast collections of religious and secular artefacts housed within the Vatican Museum.

Located throughout the city are the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. These include the five great patriarchal Basilicas of St. John Lateran (the cathedral church of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope), St. Peters, St. Paul outside the walls, St. Mary Major and St. Laurence outside the walls. These along with the minor basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and St. Sebastian comprise the popular pilgrimage route.

Other religious and historical places of interest where groups may decide to visit include the Catacombs, the Scala Santa (the Holy Stairway), the Capuchin Crypt in the church of Our Lady of the Conception, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the English College.

Whilst visiting Rome, groups will be provided with ample time to explore the city on their own. Our choices of hotels are central to the main historical places of interest.

Cascia is a town in the province of Perugia; located in a rather remote area of the mountainous south-eastern corner of Umbria. It is about 21 km from Norcia.

The modern territory of Cascia was the home of the Roman settlement of Carsulae, destroyed in the 1st century BC by an earthquake.  In the Middle Ages, it was sacked by the Byzantines and the Lombards, and was later a fortified town of the Trinci family.  It was occupied by Papal troops in the 15th century, and thenceforth it was a Papal town until the unification of Italy in 1860.

Cascia was the home of Saint Rita of Cascia, who was born in the nearby hamlet of Roccaporena in 1381 and died there in 1457. After her canonization in 1900, a large shrine Basilica was built in Cascia to house the incorrupt remains of the Saint; which is an important place of pilgrimage and the house where she was born is still be visited. At her canonization ceremony, St Rita was bestowed the title of 'Patroness of Impossible Causes'.

Assisi is a beautiful town in the Perugia Province of Italy which boasts breathtaking views overlooking the Umbrian Valley.  Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines all contribute to ensuring that Assisi is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Italy.

Assisi is famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francis, Patron Saint of Italy who founded the Franciscan Religious Order and Saint Clare the founder of the order of Poor Clare’s.

What will I see when I visit:

•  Visit the tomb of Saint Francis.
•  Basilica di San Francesco- world heritage site which is filled with beautiful frescos detailing Saint Francis’ life. We will also visit the Convent of San Damiano; where the miraculous conversion of St Francis took place and he heard the calling - 'Go rebuild my church'
•  Basilica di Santa Chiara- final resting place of Saint Clare.
